Clan Farquharson was and remains one of the largest land owning clan in Scotland. At the height of clan power large parts of Aberdeenshire, Angus and Perthshire belongs to the various branches of Clan Farquharson. The growth of the clan was based largely on the increase of lands of the clan. By the time of the Battle of Culloden the Clan had grown to such strength that they were occupied by the British Army for years after the last Jacobite Rebellion.

Each of the branches of Clan Farquharson own lands that ranged from several acres to thousands of acres of land. On the estate lands would live the people who would work the land. It was these people who formed the backbone of the clans military strength. Most of the septs of Clan Farquharson would come from these families. Other septs and allied families came from lands that shared borders with Clan Farquharson lands.
